Reviewer verdict

Across 24 YouTube reviews, the Western Digital WD Black SN850X earns an Index score of 3.8/5, ranking #49 among SSDs. Reviewers most often praise its performance, features, compatibility, while the most common criticisms concern performance, price.

The WD Black SN850X is repeatedly praised for its top-tier performance, with reviewers frequently noting very high sequential read and write speeds, strong real-world transfer and game-loading performance, and consistent placement at or near the top of benchmark charts (mentioned in many reviews). Reviewers also highlight practical performance benefits for gamers and creators, reporting faster boot and load times and smooth handling of intensive workloads when cooling is adequate. Additional commonly cited strengths include useful gaming-focused features and design touches (Game Mode 2.0, heatsink options) and broad compatibility with PCs and PlayStation 5. Overall praise is widespread across the 24 reviews, appearing most often under performance and then features/compatibility aspects.

Criticisms are primarily focused on performance nuances and value: several reviewers reported that random and some write speeds are only average or fall short of the fastest competing drives, and that real-world gains (especially on PS5) may be marginal for many users. Price and positioning were also frequent concerns, with multiple reviewers calling the drive relatively expensive compared with other flagship SSDs or noting inconsistent global pricing. Other recurring complaints include thermal behavior under sustained load and form-factor/compatibility caveats (heatsink thickness or enclosure fit), though these were less commonly raised than price and performance trade-offs.

Game mode is something which PC gamers, be you esports professionals, streamers, or someone that's just casually knocking around on COD, you are going to see the benefits. Game mode kind of changes the gears in the internals of your PC system to take advantage of the SSD's performance. It does things like prioritizing the processes of games that you are running with the drive. On top of that, it does predictive loading where it can see the heights and peaks of when games are loading and make sure that the SSD is unfettered by other processes when you need it most. ▶ WD Black SN850X SSD - Should You Buy It? @ 1:17

Because of the similarities in its architecture with its predecessor drive, it has to be said that it still manages to run a little hot. Now I say a little hot, it certainly runs a little less hot than the SN850, thanks to presumable improvements in the architecture of the SSD. But when I compared it against the performance of many other SSDs that have been released since the SN850 and before this drive arrived on the scene, the WD Black series of PCIE Gen 4 SSDs does seem to still run just that little bit hotter in more intensive and sustained operations. ▶ WD Black SN850X SSD - Should You Buy It? @ 6:05

Across the whole WD Black series, durability is consistent. Just because you go for the drives that cost a little bit less, you get the same durability rate across all of them.
