The Onkyo TX-NR797 is consistently praised for its extensive feature set, with reviewers (21 mentions) highlighting comprehensive HDMI support, wide codec compatibility (Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, IMAX Enhanced), multi-room/streaming options and gamer-friendly performance. Many reviewers (15 mentions) also emphasize strong connectivity including Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, AirPlay 2, Chromecast and multiple HDMI inputs/outputs that make hooking up sources and smart home integration straightforward. Sound quality is another recurring strength (19 mentions): reviewers report clear, cinematic, and well-balanced audio with convincing 3D effects even without upward-firing speakers, plus support for dual subwoofers and THX/DTS Master audio benefits. Ease of setup and tuning comes up positively (8 mentions) as well, with on-screen overlays, helpful calibration and an intuitive UI making initial configuration relatively simple for most users.

Criticisms are far less frequent but consistent: some reviewers (3 mentions) note limitations or legacy behavior related to displays and pass-through indicators, such as retained 1080p displays. A few users (3 mentions) find the AccuEQ room calibration and overall interface less refined than competing solutions, warning that without accurate calibration sound can suffer. Connectivity and firmware issues are mentioned (2 mentions) — lack of multi-channel input and occasional firmware-related audio dropouts — and a small number of reviewers raise power/voltage and impedance concerns (build and performance) that may affect specific speaker setups.
