Reviewer verdict

Across 23 YouTube reviews, the WD_BLACK SN850X earns an Index score of 3.9/5, ranking #46 among SSDs. Reviewers most often praise its performance, durability, features, while the most common criticisms concern durability, performance.

The WD_BLACK SN850X consistently delivers top-tier PCIe Gen4 performance, with sequential read speeds approaching 7,300 MB/s that make it a standout choice for enthusiasts. This raw speed translates directly into tangible benefits like drastically reduced game load times and accelerated file transfers, making it highly recommended for gamers and content creators on both PC and PlayStation 5. Reviewers frequently praise its seamless PS5 compatibility and the effectiveness of the optional heatsink, which ensures sustained performance during intense sessions. The drive is further supported by useful WD Dashboard software featuring a Game Mode 2.0, and when found on sale, it offers an excellent price-to-performance ratio.

The most significant drawback of the SN850X is its high operating temperature, which necessitates a heatsink or robust motherboard thermal solution to prevent throttling and maintain peak speeds. While extremely fast, it may not be the absolute top performer in every benchmark, with some competitors showing a slight edge in random read/write tests. The drive can also carry a premium price, especially for models with a heatsink. Furthermore, some reviewers have raised serious reliability and quality control concerns specifically for the 8 TB variant, which has reportedly experienced sudden failures.
