Reviewer verdict
Across 19 YouTube reviews, the WD_BLACK SN770M earns an Index score of 4.1/5, ranking #25 among SSDs. Reviewers most often praise its performance, compatibility, capacity, while the most common criticisms concern other, compatibility.
The WD_BLACK SN770M is widely praised as a purpose-built, high-impact upgrade for handheld gaming PCs like the Steam Deck and ROG Ally. Reviewers consistently highlight its impressive PCIe Gen4 performance, with read speeds up to 5,150 MB/s delivering significantly faster game installations and level loading times compared to stock drives. Its availability in large capacities, up to 2TB, effectively solves the critical storage limitations of these portable devices. The drive’s use of reliable TLC NAND ensures consistent performance even as it fills up. Combined with an easy installation process, a 5-year warranty from a trusted brand, and useful monitoring software, it stands out as a top-tier solution for gamers seeking more space and speed in a compact form factor.
The primary drawbacks center on its specialized M.2 2230 form factor, which restricts compatibility to a narrow range of devices and can make it pricier than common 2280 drives. Several reviewers caution that the drive can run hot under sustained, heavy workloads, potentially reaching high temperatures that cause minor thermal throttling if the device lacks adequate cooling. As a DRAM-less SSD, its write performance can also drop significantly during extremely large file transfers once its SLC cache is exhausted. Finally, while physical installation is easy, the upgrade often requires a time-consuming OS reinstall.
