Reviewer verdict

Across 29 YouTube reviews, the Audeze Penrose X earns an Index score of 3.6/5, ranking #44 among Gaming Headsets. Reviewers most often praise its sound quality, connectivity, comfort, while the most common criticisms concern comfort, sound quality.

The Penrose X is widely praised for its exceptional sound quality, with many reviewers (54 mentions) highlighting detailed, balanced audio, strong bass, and excellent imaging from its planar magnetic drivers. Comfort is a close second strength (50 mentions), with frequent notes about soft memory-foam ear pads, good weight distribution, and long-session wearability. Reviewers also commonly praise the headset's versatile connectivity (48 mentions) — low-latency 2.4 GHz wireless plus Bluetooth and wired options — and a healthy feature set (29 mentions) that includes large drivers, battery life, onboard controls, and a detachable mic. Overall impressions repeatedly call it a significant audio step up from related models and a solid all-around gaming headset praised by many reviewers.

Criticisms cluster around sound tuning and electronic noise (33 mentions), with several reviewers noting harsh or uneven treble, occasional hiss, and changes between wired and wireless modes that can reduce detail. Comfort issues are also prominent (28 mentions), particularly initial strong clamp force, pleather pads that trap heat, and fit or pressure problems for some users. The microphone and connectivity drew recurring complaints (27 and 24 mentions respectively), including underwhelming mic clarity, plosives and breath noise, dongle/Bluetooth dropouts, mode quirks, and occasional line-level/static issues. Additional concerns include build and software rough edges (multiple mentions) that some reviewers felt detract from an otherwise strong audio offering.

sound quality is amazing on this ▶ Audeze Penrose FULL REVIEW @ 0:32
I actually liked that this pulled down some of the treble a little bit for me because even though the Penrose can sound dark with some tracks because of the way the planar magnetic is tuned there are very specific notes that are a little bit sibilant in ear piercing and sharp and the wicked cushions solved a lot of that for me by reducing it and making it sound a little bit darker ▶ Wicked Cushions Pads on Audeze Penrose Headset - With Measur @ 8:08
